Oloroso (Bodegas Serdio)

A very aromatic and fairly glyceric Oloroso

Where to start when a new bodega presents its wines? In this case Bodegas Serdio is working with the stocks of Bodegas Urium, of which we’ve reviewed a handful of wines in the past few years. So I decided to go for the Oloroso that we hadn’t written about.

This wine is often referenced to as the Oloroso En Rama, but on the front label it only says Oloroso. It is the “entry-level” Oloroso of around 22 years old, there’s also a VORS version which is well above 30 years of age. It’s easy to tell it was bottled with minimal filtering: whatever the temperature it will always make a rather cloudy impression. We like that.

On the back label they printed L- which should be followed by a printed reference to the bottling date. However on my bottle this space is left empty. I reckon this is a production fault of the early batches. In any case I always like to know the bottling date.

Oloroso - Bodegas Serdio - sherry

Oloroso (20,5%, Serdio 2025, 2500 btl.)

Nose: jumping out of the glass. Full of aromas, lots of walnuts and roasted cashews, along with tobacco and a good dose of freshly polished furniture. There’s quite a big glyceric side which makes it seems slightly sweet. This is amplified by jammy hints of red berries, quince jelly and big hints of orange marmalade. Very attractive. In the background also a faint mineral note, cinnamon and light whiffs of mocha.

Mouth: still full-bodied and fairly glyceric, providing a brilliant mix of sweet and sour notes, along with roasted spice, some leathery hints of beautiful polished oak. Walnuts and bitter almonds, along with raisins, cinnamon and subtle pepper. Hints of salted caramel and chocolate as well, although the acidity keeps it fresh and dry. Subtle hints of rancio in the medium long finish.

Availability: quite expensive (around € 45-50 for a 50 cl bottle) and not exactly easy to find at the moment. There Bodeboca and I also saw it at Sherry Shop in Germany and Ton Overmars in The Netherlands. Hopefully more retailers (outside of Spain) in the future.

Summary: The freshness and the fruitiness of the nose is quite remarkable. On the palate it gets more serious, but still in an elegant way. Already a well-aged Oloroso, you can tell. Ambitious pricing but also high quality.

4.5

Excellent
